June 24, 2019
On July 20, 2019, The West Liberty Area Arts Council, West Liberty, Iowa, will sponsor its second annual Plein Air Painting Event in conjunction with the Muscatine County Fair. Participants may paint anywhere in West Liberty as well as anywhere on the fairgrounds. Entrance to the fair will be free to participants. Registration is $30.00.
Plein Air (French for “open air”) painting refers to the practice of painting outdoors and utilizing natural light, whatever it may be on any given day. The practice was popularized by the French Impressionists and their desire to capture the changing light. In recent years Plein Air events have become popular in the U.S.
Registration for West Liberty’s event will take place at Owl Glass Puppetry Center, 319 N. Calhoun St, from 8:00 AM to noon on Saturday, July 20. Participants should bring blank canvases (or paper, or whatever they choose to paint on). These will be stamped at registration. There is no limit to the number of stamped canvases, but only two may be submitted for judging. Additional works can be submitted for an added fee of $10.00 each. Since judging is anonymous, no works should be signed. Maximum size is 24” x 24”; all media may be used. Submitted work should be framed and ready for display and must be turned in to the West Liberty Public Library by 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 21.
The following awards will be presented at 4:00 P.M:
- First Place: $500.00
- Second Place: $250.00
- Third Place: $150.00
- Artist Choice: $100 (voted on by participating artists)
